This cartoon, part of an AIDS awareness campaign, promotes condom use while depicting some situations you won't see in American public service announcements. Take a look.
The Salon link requires a premercial for non-members, so click here to see the video hassle-free. It is moderately NSFW.
I can't see the link to the seeded article!? Could you please post a link in the comments?
Hm, the green button worked for me. Hope I didn't screw up. Anyway, here's the link: http://www.salon.com/ent/video_dog/ads/2006/05/02/sugar_baby_love/
If you aren't signed up for Salon you have to view an obligatory ad before you can view the movie.
That was... startling. Really good, yet kinda odd at the same time.
Good lord, that was a racy cartoon (after I clicked around to get to it). You definitely won't be seeing stuff like that in this country for some time to come.
First time I've ever seen a peniscoaster.
And apparently they're also supporting homosexuality.
Um. Ok. Remind me never to live in France. Reminds me of how messed up Anime is, it screws with my mind.
it is not anime - as it is not japanese, and the old stereotype of anime being violent and full of sex was never accurate, even more so these days.
Umm...I didn't say it was Anime. I said it's messed up presentation reminded me of anime.
If "supporting" means acknowledging there are gay people and they don't have to die of shame or anything, then yes, I suppose they are.
What about us straight people? That cartoon didn't teach me anything and did nothing for my self confidence either!!
Really? It taught me that you should use a condom, and that not every guy is good but someday, if you keep looking, you will meet one who is. Those lessons are just as applicable to a straight girl's life as to a gay man's.
Well said. While it's not for me, I have nothing against the gay lifestyle.
The message is pertinent to all walks of life.....
smithco-
Their is no positive message in any sex ed videos. The message is if your going to sleep around gay or not use a condom. The whole doctor thing was his true love, not a cure for AIDS, hell he didn't even go to see the doctor b/c he might have AIDS he went there because he got the shiz beat out of him.
condoms
Skal is right. Every time he has sex -- including his first time on the "penis-coaster," our hero uses a condom. That way when he meets the man of his dreams (the doctor), he is healthy.
The same director made a spot featuring a straight female cartoon character, who also practices safer sex and eventually gets married to a man she meets on a bridge.
I agree with you annalog. I really liked the message and so did many of my co-workers...
Oh, I remember that one! Lovely!
That was a great!
It's nice to see the topic of "safer sex" and homosexuality
dealt with in such an honest and yet whimsical fashion.
Kudos.
that was hilarious, the one from 2005 was funny too
Interesting....I'm all for the promoting condom usage. And I have no problem with using animated gay men to promote it. I lived in England for a few years while I was in the Navy and was struck by how much more open the European nations are about sexuality. I love the USA and wouldn't not trade my citizenship here for anything, but Americans are so prudish about some things. This commercial would never get aired here, but it should be because the message needs to be put out more, and something like this would definitely get talked about.
..while I`ll respect your views,I`ll demand the same.. if being prudish means being un-gay(not anti in so much as a belief its wrong)and sure as heck against seeing it plastered all over the tube then...so be it !!
I did some more research, and it appears the ad was part of an Internet viral marketing campaign and did not air on TV.
I meant prudish in the way a lot of Americans react to anything dealing with sex. When Janet Jackson's breast can cause the uproar it caused, there is something wrong. I have had two children and was told by my doctors that breast feeding was the best thing for them, so I tried it, and it worked great. Sometimes, while shopping at the mall, the baby would get hungry, so I would have to feed her. I made sure that I always had a blanket on hand so that I could ensure that my daughter and I were completely covered while I fed her and my older daughter played in the play area while I did. I got more mean looks and comments from people than I can count, and this is while I and my baby and my breast were completely covered. It's that attitude that I consider prudish, and that has nothing to do with whether you think being gay is wrong.
..I too have children and now grandchildren... so you still seem to be saying if I have a different view from you on whats appropriate in public that I`m less than you..sorry that`s not going to fly...there is a time and place for everything..and this anything at anytime is pure insanity..what two grown adults engage in behind closed shades is only their business, but in public "WE" decide whats appropriate..watching a mother breast feeding a child would be about as close to God as I could wish to get in my opinion..but some might be offended..again,is the time and place appropriate..common sense...if it doesn`t feel quite right chances are its not..as public as a mall would be..no this would not be appropriate imhho..
I would rather see a bare breast on prime time than one more person get blown away on CSI. Honestly, which one is more detrimental?
I'd rather children grow up boobiesexual than desensitized to violence.
The main message seemed to me that if you sleep with enough people you eventually will both nearly die and find your true love. Seemed rather masochistic while not really making a direct obvious link between condom use and surviving.
To be better I would have had one of his partners die of aids in a way that let you know it was aids he died of while the main character gets checked at a clinic and is ok. I'm not sure I'd put a happy end at the end just because I don't see how tying together lots of random sex with finding a good partner is helpful.
Well, that was quite weird.
That was brilliant! I think that I may have weird dreams for a while about the penis coaster, and the scary muscle-builder - but I think that it was a great message and should be listened to by everyone - gay, straight, bi, trans, what-have-you.
I am now forwarding it to all of my friends!
This is the second part of an annual anti-aids campaign. Last year's cartoon was this: 2005 video Personally I like this one better.
